Is the "neither-nor" generation changing in Brazil? 03.07.2026

Brazil's educational and professional landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, challenging the stereotype of the "neither-nor" generation (nem-nem) — youth who neither study nor work. Data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Pnad) reveal that the proportion of employed Brazilians who also attend educational institutions rose from 13.1% in 2019 to 15.1% in 2025. This represents a growth of approximately 27% in the number of people balancing work and study, reaching 15.5 million Brazilians. This progress exceeds the 8% growth observed among those who opted exclusively for work during the same period.
