Sociologist Isabelle Sommier, a specialist in political violence, reports a significant increase in political violence in France, with a doubling of aggressions over the past decade. Her research, analyzing data from 2017 to the present, indicates a surge in political violence, particularly since the 2022 presidential campaign. While 5,500 incidents were recorded between 1986 and 2017, the new database has already documented 2,300 incidents in less than ten years. The number of confrontations has quintupled, and the severity of attacks has increased, resulting in six deaths since 2022, all attributed to radical right activists. This trend is linked to the fragmentation and polarization of the ideological landscape and the brutalization of discourse.
