Israel vows to create military-controlled zone around Lebanon's Litani River 02.06.2026

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on Monday an intent to establish a military-controlled zone around the Litani River in southern Lebanon, vowing to extend strikes to Beirut until Hezbollah ceases its attacks, stating "there will be no peace in Beirut" if northern Israel is not peaceful. This declaration follows Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's directive to expand military control in Hezbollah-held Lebanese territories, notably after Israeli forces captured the Beaufort Ridge, marking their deepest advance into Lebanon in over two decades. Despite a mid-April ceasefire, exchanges of fire persist, with Hezbollah claiming responsibility for a drone attack that killed an Israeli soldier and wounded three others on Monday. Israel reports continued rocket and drone launches from Hezbollah, while also conducting strikes, including plans to target Beirut's southern suburbs following alleged Hezbollah ceasefire violations.
