Israeli court extends detention of two Gaza flotilla activists 05.05.2026

An Israeli court in Ashkelon extended the detention of two pro-Palestinian activists, Spanish national Saif Abu Keshek and Brazilian national Thiago Ávila, by six days for further questioning. They were among approximately 175 activists detained when Israeli forces intercepted 22 boats of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) in international waters near Greece last Thursday; the others were released on Crete. Israel suspects Abu Keshek of affiliation with a terrorist group and Ávila of illegal activity, allegations their lawyer Hadeel Abu Salih called baseless, describing their isolation and blindfolding as psychological torture. Spain and Brazil have declared the detention illegal and demanded their release, with Brazil's president calling it "unjustifiable." Israel maintains the interception complied with international law to enforce a blockade, while the UN warns Gaza's humanitarian crisis remains severe.
