In a stark reminder of basic security failures, a company's IT department inadvertently caused a data breach by leaving user credentials exposed. The incident, reported by Marc Bishop of Wytlabs, occurred when the company moved offices and decided to repurpose old laptops for new employees. To simplify the login process, IT staff placed sticky notes on each laptop containing the employee's name and initial login credentials. These laptops were then stored in a conference room while the facilities team finished preparing the new office space.
