The Italian fishing village of Varenna, located on Lake Como, has introduced strict new clothing regulations to protect the quality of life of its 650 residents from the nuisance of mass tourism. Authorities have decided that tourists walking through the narrow alleys with bare chests or in bikinis could face fines ranging from 50 to 200 euros. Mayor Mauro Manzoni emphasized that while the village is proud of its hundreds of thousands of annual visitors, tranquility and decency in public spaces, such as churches and restaurants, must be maintained. In addition to the clothing rules, new restrictions have been implemented for tour groups, which may not exceed 25 people and must not block passage in the alleys. The use of speakers by guides is also prohibited in an effort to restore peace to the ancient village.
