Despite the Department of Justice scrapping its proposed $1.8 billion "Anti-Weaponization Fund," numerous January 6 defendants are still pursuing government compensation through alternative legal avenues, including the Federal Tort Claims Act. Attorney Peter Ticktin announced plans to submit claims for approximately 400 clients, with a recent lawsuit filed for nine individuals seeking at least $1 million each in damages, alleging wrongful prosecution and misconduct by law enforcement. Former President Donald Trump has publicly stated that these individuals "should be reimbursed," referencing the nearly 1,600 pardons he granted to those associated with the January 6 Capitol assault. While the proposed fund faced bipartisan opposition, Ticktin remains optimistic that the Trump administration will be more receptive to these claims moving forward, despite previous federal government inaction on similar claims.
