Janez Janša lashes out at the Golobs: They promised and lied, but have done nothing 07.07.2026

Premier Janez Janša has expressed sharp criticism of Robert Golob's government regarding Slovenia's defense spending. Based on new NATO alliance reports released ahead of the summit in Ankara, Slovenia is the only member this year that does not spend at least 2% of its gross domestic product (GDP) on core defense needs. According to alliance data, Slovenia will spend only 1.61% of its GDP, which represents approximately 1.61 billion euros. Janša highlighted on the social network X that this fact endangers the country's credibility within the alliance and our own security. In accordance with the Hague agreements, Slovenia should increase defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035, with 3.5% allocated to core defense needs. Following the Ankara summit, Slovenia is expected to prepare a credible national plan to fulfill these commitments.
