Japan weighs stricter age verification for social media users 03.06.2026

Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has put forth a draft proposal aimed at combating social media addiction among the youth. A key component of these measures involves urging social networking service (SNS) operators to implement more rigorous age verification processes for their users. The ministry, however, does not favor a universal age restriction similar to the one adopted by Australia. This draft was presented to an expert panel on Tuesday, with the intention of finalizing a policy by the end of 2024, following discussions with the Children and Families Agency and other relevant government bodies.
