Je brein is volgens nieuw onderzoek toch nog niet ‘af’ op je 25ste: ontwikkeling loopt door tot begin 30 23.02.2026

Contrary to the long-held belief that the brain fully develops by age 25, new research indicates that brain development continues into the early thirties. This earlier assumption stemmed from studies in the late 1990s and early 2000s observing changes in gray matter during adolescence, particularly in the frontal lobe responsible for planning and judgment. However, recent large-scale studies analyzing white matter connectivity in over 4200 individuals reveal a crucial developmental phase from approximately age 9 to 32. During this period, brain networks become more efficient through a balance of specialization and integration, with stabilization occurring around the early thirties. This suggests a gradual, individual-specific maturation process rather than a definitive endpoint at 25.
