JICA equips Tanzanian women, youth with skills for self-employment 07.07.2026

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is empowering Tanzanian women and youth through a volunteer programme focused on practical entrepreneurship and vocational skills. Celebrating 60 years of cooperation between Tanzania and Japan, the initiative provides training in soap making, plastic waste recycling, and the production of handmade goods like yarn hair accessories. At the 50th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair, Japanese Overseas Cooperation Volunteer Mr. Masahiko Konishi highlighted how these skills help communities create sustainable livelihoods and employment. In the Iringa Region, students at Mkwawa Secondary School use soap sales to improve school facilities, while women in Kalenga Ward learn to monetize existing sewing skills. Despite challenges regarding market access, the programme successfully utilizes affordable, locally available materials to help participants generate income and support their families through diverse, marketable products.
