John Davidson: How I deal with fame after Tourette's film hit and Bafta row 08.06.2026

John Davidson, a 55-year-old Tourette's campaigner and community centre caretaker, has reduced his work hours due to his growing international recognition following the BAFTA-winning film "I Swear," which chronicles his life story. Since the film's release, he has been contacted by hundreds of Tourette's sufferers and supporters globally, from the US to Africa and China, seeking to join the conversation and raise awareness. Despite a controversy at the BAFTA ceremony where he shouted a racist slur, for which he expressed deep mortification and apologies were issued, Davidson believes the film has spurred an international movement for better understanding and acceptance of Tourette's syndrome. At home, attitudes have shifted from public tutting to supportive gestures towards individuals with Tourette's, as evidenced by a recent awareness event in Galashiels where the local council building was illuminated teal.
