The 18-year-old rower João Sebastião Veloso was received at the Viana do Castelo City Council after winning the gold medal in the Rowing World Cup (LM1x) in Seville, Spain. The athlete began his sporting journey through the educational project "Náutica nas Escolas" (Nautical Sports in Schools), promoted by the municipality, which provides access to various nautical disciplines. After joining the Viana Remadores do Lima club, Veloso reached the top of the podium in May 2026, recording a time of 6:56.04 minutes and surpassing competitors from Hong Kong and Belarus. With the goal of becoming an Olympic athlete, the young man will soon depart for the United States to study at the University of Pennsylvania.
