José María Balcázar does not rule out a pardon for Pedro Castillo: "I must have legal grounds" 07.07.2026

Interim President José María Balcázar did not rule out the possibility of granting a pardon to former President Pedro Castillo, despite the Presidential Pardon Commission recently rejecting his request. Balcázar emphasized that, although it is a presidential prerogative, it requires solid legal and constitutional grounds to proceed. The leader clarified that the matter was not formally addressed during his meeting with members of Juntos por el Perú, although he mentioned the existence of social demands for this benefit. Balcázar suggested that a pardon could serve as a turning point for national pacification, comparing the need for consensus to historical processes in Spain and Germany. Finally, he noted that an eventual government under Keiko Fujimori should seek consensus to avoid governing a divided country following the current political crisis.
