Judge grills DC jail on treatment of shooting suspect Cole Tomas Allen 05.05.2026

On May 4, Magistrate Judge Zia M. Faruqui held a hearing regarding the treatment of Cole Tomas Allen, who is accused of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump at the Washington Hilton on April 25. Despite Allen being removed from restrictive suicide watch conditions, Judge Faruqui expressed "grave concerns" over his solitary confinement and lack of access to a Bible. Faruqui compared Allen’s treatment unfavorably to Jan. 6 defendants, demanding the DC Department of Corrections provide a housing update by May 5. While prosecutors cited Allen’s prior statements as justification for initial precautions, the judge labeled the conditions excessive. Allen, who faces life imprisonment, awaits a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 11 to address the serious attempted assassination and firearm charges.
