Judgment reserved for Usindiso building arsonist as court awaits vital evidence 03.06.2026

The South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg has postponed the judgment for Sithembiso Lawrence Mdlalose, accused of starting the fatal Usindiso Building fire on August 31, 2023. The postponement, set until July 21, 2026, is to allow the State to address court-raised issues concerning postmortem findings and comply with directives. Mdlalose, 31, allegedly set fire to the building after a dispute and assault over drug money with a resident named "KB," mistakenly believing he had killed him. The fire in the hijacked building, home to over 200 people, resulted in 76 counts of murder and 12 of attempted murder against Mdlalose. This tragedy prompted the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi.
