Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) acting chief, Commissioner Julius Mkhwanazi, has resumed his testimony at the Madlanga Commission, where he is seeking to clear his name against multiple allegations, including kidnapping and corruption. Mkhwanazi vehemently denied wrongdoing, specifically refuting claims that he kidnapped EMPD spokesperson Kelebogile Thepa in Tembisa in 2023 and asserting that his operational decisions were lawful and in the public interest. He argued it was unfair to place blame on him for issues within the large police unit, stating, "It cannot always be me." The commission is currently examining inconsistencies in his account, particularly regarding decision-making and oversight, amidst growing public demand for accountability.
