Junior Jewish footballers face constant on-field abuse, royal commission hears 07.05.2026

The Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion heard that junior Jewish footballers, some as young as seven, are experiencing frequent and severe antisemitic abuse in Melbourne's South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL). Ajax Junior Football Club president Daniel Onas testified that the club, with over 750 players aged seven to 18, has dealt with an average of one incident per week, including Holocaust-themed slurs and physical altercations. This has led the club to engage a private investigator for match-day incidents starting in the 2025 season, as parents and volunteers are exhausted by the ongoing burden of managing and resolving the abuse. Onas emphasized the need for leagues and peak sporting bodies to take leadership roles in educating participants about antisemitism.
