just inHazmat team called in after mercury spill at courier company in Penang 5h ago

A hazardous materials incident occurred at a courier and logistics company in George Town, Penang, on Thursday when a package containing 500ml of mercury was damaged during the sorting process around 1pm. The Penang Fire and Rescue Department dispatched a team from the Jalan Perak fire station, who mobilized their Hazmat unit to conduct control and decontamination operations. Five workers—three men and two women aged 20 to 45—were given first aid at the scene and then taken to Penang Hospital for further evaluation. According to Penang Fire and Rescue Department operations division director John Sagun Francis, the patients were in stable condition. The Hazmat operation concluded two hours later, and no other hazardous substances were detected at the site. Mercury is highly toxic and can cause serious health effects through inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact, making rapid containment critical in such spills. The incident highlights the risks of handling hazardous materials in logistics operations and the importance of emergency response protocols.
