Katholische Kirche Bischofskonferenz wählt Wilmer zum neuen Vorsitzenden 24.02.2026

Heiner Wilmer, Bishop of Hildesheim since 2018, was elected the new chairman of the German Bishops' Conference on February 24, 2026, succeeding Georg Bätzing. The 64-year-old is regarded as a mediator between conservatives and reformers, known for his progressive stance, including advocating for women in leadership and reforms in Catholic sexual morality, such as the blessing of same-sex couples. In his initial statement, Wilmer emphasized the church's crucial role in society, its social engagement, and its commitment to peace, while also addressing the need to hear and support victims of sexual abuse. Catholic organizations like ZdK, BDKJ, and kfd, alongside the EKD, expressed optimism and urged the continuation of reforms under his leadership.
