The Gulag Museum in Moscow, which previously documented the Soviet forced labor camp system under Joseph Stalin, is undergoing a significant transformation. Under President Vladimir Putin's administration, Russia has largely ceased its efforts to confront Stalin's terror. The museum, founded in 2001 and relocated in 2015, was closed in 2024 due to alleged fire safety issues. It will now reopen as the "Museum of Memory," focusing on German war crimes and genocide against the Soviet people during World War II. The new exhibition will cover all stages of Nazi atrocities, aiming to instill a rejection of Nazism in younger generations, aligning with Moscow's current narrative of fighting Nazis in Ukraine.
