Keir Starmer says post-ceasefire Israeli strikes on Lebanon ‘wrong’ 09.04.2026

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has declared Israeli strikes on Lebanon following a US-Iran ceasefire deal as "wrong" and stated they "should stop." During a trip to Gulf nations, including Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, Starmer emphasized that such actions imperil the two-week truce brokered by US President Donald Trump. He also clarified the UK's monitoring of US bases to ensure their use is for collective self-defence, not offensive operations. Starmer expressed his disapproval of Trump's inflammatory language, asserting that British values and principles guide the UK's approach, and that any commitment of service personnel must have a lawful basis and a viable plan. The strikes on Hezbollah on Wednesday marked the deadliest day in Lebanon since the conflict began, with Tehran also closing the Strait of Hormuz in response.
