Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo will not participate in the Preakness Stakes next weekend, trainer Cherie DeVaux announced Wednesday. The decision was made by DeVaux and the owners to prioritize the colt's health and long-term future, allowing him more time to recover from his significant effort in the Derby. Instead, Golden Tempo is being pointed towards the Belmont Stakes on June 6 at Saratoga Race Course. This marks the third time in five years a Derby winner has skipped the Preakness, highlighting ongoing debates about the spacing of the Triple Crown races. The Preakness is being held at Laurel Park this year due to renovations at its usual home, Pimlico Race Course.
