Irrigation surge in Kenya 07.07.2026

Since 2022, Kenya has significantly expanded its irrigation infrastructure to bolster food production and strengthen overall agricultural output. Current government data reveals that 770,000 acres are now under irrigation through various strategic initiatives. Major ongoing projects include Bura, Galana Kulalu, and Bunyala. In the Bura scheme, 2,245 registered farmers are participating, with the project expected to benefit between 70,000 and 100,000 people. Private investors have also contributed by leasing 35,000 acres for rice and 50,000 acres for sugarcane. Furthermore, Bunyala currently has 3,200 acres under production, while Galana Kulalu Phase One maintains 1,500 acres of maize. Notably, rice irrigation is benefiting 300,000 households, with the Mwea region specifically recording a significant 59 per cent rise in rice production over the last three years.
