National Situation: High-risk counties 11.08.2026

Kenya's National Disaster and Operations Center (NDOC) has released a comprehensive assessment identifying high-risk counties that will require priority attention ahead of expected El Niño conditions in 2026. The Lake basin region, including Kisumu, Busia, Siaya, Homa Bay, and Migori, is particularly vulnerable to multiple hazards such as flooding, landslides, disease outbreaks, and displacement. These areas face significant risks due to their geographical location and population density. Coastal counties including Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, Mombasa, and Kwale are also classified as high-risk, facing threats from flooding, storm surges, and coastal erosion. Urban centres, particularly Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu, are identified as at risk for flooding, drainage blockages, and service disruptions, which could severely impact economic activities and essential services. The assessment also highlights broader vulnerabilities across the country, including food insecurity, drought, and waterborne diseases that may be exacerbated by the anticipated weather phenomenon. The NDOC's early warning system aims to facilitate proactive preparation and resource allocation to mitigate the impact of El Niño on these high-risk areas.
