Inflation highlights: May 2026 03.06.2026

Overall inflation in Kenya rose to 6.7 percent in May 2026, up from 5.6 percent in April, according to the Central Bank of Kenya. This increase is largely attributed to non-core inflation, which surged to 16.0 percent due to volatile factors like fuel prices and food supply. Core inflation, representing long-term trends and comprising 81.1 percent of the Consumer Price Index, remained relatively stable at 3.2 percent. Within the core basket, transportation costs, particularly city bus and matatu fares, saw the steepest rise at 25.0 percent, followed by beef with bone at 11.0 percent. Conversely, non-core inflation was driven by sharp increases in tomato prices (45.7 percent), diesel (41.2 percent), and cabbages (37.8 percent), while electricity prices saw minor decreases.
