Kenya-US Ebola preparedness deal: What we know so far 03.06.2026

Kenya and the United States have entered a bilateral health agreement designating the Laikipia Air Base in Nanyuki as a critical Ebola preparedness hub. The agreement involves the US sending Americans exposed to Ebola to Kenya for monitoring in a planned 50-bed quarantine facility at the air base. The US will provide over 30 public health personnel and has pledged Sh1.7 billion for initial response efforts, with an additional Sh14.4 billion committed to a regional Ebola response, particularly relevant given the over 220 deaths reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The initiative aims to bolster health systems, surveillance, and testing, and provide medical supplies. However, a Kenyan court has temporarily halted the quarantine aspect of the deal pending further review, with a hearing set for June 12, 2026. President William Ruto has defended the agreement as part of ongoing global health security partnerships.
