Experimentelle KI für Täterfahndung mit DNA-Spuren liefert „spektakuläre“ Ergebnisse 22.02.2026

Chinese researchers have developed an experimental AI model, Difface, capable of generating remarkably clear 3D facial images from DNA sequences, a breakthrough described as "spectacular" by experts. This technology, trained on a Chinese database of genetic data and corresponding images, could revolutionize criminal investigations by creating realistic facial composites from DNA evidence, projecting a person's appearance across different age stages. While this advancement holds immense potential for suspect identification, it raises significant ethical and data privacy concerns, particularly in Germany, where similar biogeographical DNA analyses, which infer continental origin, have been rejected due to fears of discrimination. Experts acknowledge the need for rigorous validation and careful consideration of risks versus benefits, emphasizing that AI should serve as a supportive tool rather than a final decision-maker in the conservative and validation-driven field of forensic science.
