„Klimawandel schreibt die Spielregeln neu“: Gletscher wachsen plötzlich und werden zu Katastrophen-Herden 24.02.2026

A study by the University of Portsmouth, published in Nature Reviews Earth and Environment, has identified over 3,100 "surge glaciers" worldwide, which, unlike most retreating glaciers, grow and advance rapidly, posing significant dangers. Although they constitute only one percent of all glaciers, they account for five percent of the global glacier mass. Researchers, including Dr. Harold Lovell, found 81 of these glaciers to be extremely dangerous, primarily in Asia's Karakorum mountains, threatening populated valleys and infrastructure. Climate change is exacerbating this threat by altering their behavior, with extreme weather events like heavy rainfall or warm summers triggering surges earlier than expected. These glaciers can cause severe natural disasters, including floods, avalanches, and infrastructure destruction, necessitating improved monitoring and prediction capabilities to mitigate risks.
