Kältewelle in Florida Erstarrte Leguane fallen von den Bäumen 26.01.2026

In Florida, an unusual cold snap has caused iguanas to fall from trees due to cold paralysis. These cold-blooded reptiles, native to Central and South America, enter a state of torpor when temperatures drop below 10 degrees Celsius, and can become immobile at 5-7 degrees Celsius, conserving energy. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has established collection points for residents wishing to remove these immobilized animals from their properties. The iguanas are not dead but will revive as temperatures rise, suffering no lasting damage. As an invasive species, green iguanas are not protected in Florida and can negatively impact the local ecosystem, leading to collected animals being euthanized or transferred to licensed dealers. This cold wave, attributed to an Arctic air mass, has also caused widespread power outages and over a hundred deaths across the US since January 24th.
