Ökologische Aufwertung: „Ambitionierter Naturschutz und Großstadt sind kein Widerspruch“ – Hamburg zeigt wie's geht 23.02.2026

Hamburg is launching an ambitious ten-year program, "Hamburg, deine Flussnatur," to ecologically enhance its extensive network of rivers, streams, and canals, excluding the Elbe. With a total investment of 25 million Euros, approximately 500 measures will be implemented across 38 waterways covering 375 kilometers of shoreline and over 3,000 hectares of urban area by 2035. The project, a collaboration between the federal government (contributing 17 million Euros), the city of Hamburg (1.85 million Euros), and the Stiftung Lebensraum Elbe (over 5.5 million Euros), aims to renature shores, create habitats for flora and fauna, and establish new recreational areas. This initiative seeks to demonstrate that intensive nature conservation and large urban environments are compatible, making the city more resilient to climate change impacts.
