Kostka orbits the globe: Student satellite from Brno awaits first tests 07.07.2026

The YSpace student team from the Brno University of Technology successfully placed its satellite, Kostka, into Earth's orbit using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Following a successful separation from the launch vehicle on Tuesday morning, the satellite is now preparing for a critical activation phase, during which it must deploy its antennas and fully initialize its systems after the demanding flight. The first flyover over the Czech Republic is planned for Tuesday evening around 10:00 PM, when the team will begin monitoring software parameters and system stability. Kostka is a 1U-type nanosatellite weighing approximately one kilogram, with 83 people involved in its development. This mission represents a milestone for university space research and paves the way for the future CIMER project, which will investigate the use of microalgae in microgravity.
