Severe rainfall in Croatia has caused rare olm salamanders, colloquially known as "human fish" due to their pale, pinkish skin, to surface in the streets of Split. These cave-dwelling amphibians, typically found in the dark karst cave systems of the Balkans, are usually unseen by humans. The recent devastating storms in the Split-Dalmatia region have forced them out of their subterranean habitat. The olms, which can grow up to 30 cm and live for up to 100 years, are vulnerable to surface water and microorganisms. Public institution employees have been collecting the displaced olms to rescue them, with many now being cared for at the Zagreb Zoo under constant observation.
