Kruger killings: ‘Relief’ for family as 2 Mozambicans arrested, extradition process kicks in 03.06.2026

Two Mozambican nationals, aged 32 and 33, have been arrested in Mozambique in connection with the murders of South African tourists Dina and Ernst Marais, whose bodies were discovered in Kruger National Park's Levubu River on May 22. The arrests were the result of a cross-border operation involving Mozambique’s Serviço Nacional de Investigação Criminal (Sernic), the Wildlife Justice Commission (WJC), and Kruger National Park Ranger Services. The couple, from Mossel Bay, were last seen on May 20. Following the recovery of their stolen vehicle on May 26 in Chókwè, Mozambique, the first suspect was arrested on June 1 in Chókwè, and the second on June 2 in Xai-Xai. South Africa is now initiating the formal extradition process to bring the suspects to trial for two counts of murder and hijacking, with the family expressing some relief as they prepare to lay the couple to rest.
