Labour cuts red tape on EV charging points by slashing installation costs by 95% 09.04.2026

Labour has significantly reduced red tape for installing public electric vehicle (EV) charging points, slashing the cost of formalizing requests from up to £1,000 to as little as £45. This administrative simplification, effective April 10, 2024, removes the need for lengthy 'section 50 licences' from local authorities, aiming to accelerate installations from months to days. The Department for Transport stated this will help expand England's charging network, which currently comprises 118,000 chargers, towards a government target of 300,000 by 2030. This initiative coincides with a surge in EV interest, driven by rocketing fuel prices due to global conflicts, leading to record new EV registrations in March.
