Lage in den Alpen spitzt sich dramatisch zu – Wetter verschärft Lawinengefahr für Skifahrer 23.02.2026

In Alpine regions, elevated avalanche warning levels persist, with many areas at Level 3 or higher, exacerbated by mild weather and rising temperatures that destabilize the snowpack. Experts warn of spontaneous snow slides, particularly in mid-altitudes where snow is becoming wet and heavy, leading to a loss of cohesion between layers. This increased instability means even minor snow disturbances can trigger larger avalanches, a situation made more dangerous by recent fatalities, including seven in Austria alone. The combination of sunshine and warming temperatures makes the snowpack increasingly precarious throughout the day, with a significant rise in the risk of sudden wet snow avalanches in the afternoon. A sustainable improvement is only expected after several dry days allow the snowpack to stabilize.
