Land registry, energy, tax evasion and jobs: the EU’s recommendations to Italy unchanged for over a decade 03.06.2026

The European Commission has issued country-specific recommendations to Italy, many of which are identical to those made over a decade ago, highlighting a persistent lack of reform. These unchanged recommendations include fighting tax evasion, combating undeclared work, increasing competition in transport and electricity sectors, and improving public administration efficiency. Italy is also urged to reform its labor market, focusing on collective bargaining and wages, and to accelerate judicial reforms by reducing case backlogs. A significant and long-standing recommendation concerns updating land registry values to reflect market prices. New recommendations emphasize accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources, reducing gas dependence, and addressing climate-related risks and infrastructure shortcomings, particularly in southern Italy. Furthermore, the Commission advises addressing demographic challenges and brain drain to ensure pension system sustainability and attract skilled workers.
