Langkawi missing the super rich 19h ago

Langkawi is experiencing a decline in its ultra-high-net-worth clientele following the cessation of duty-free status for luxury vehicles valued above RM300,000, a change effective this year. This policy shift has significantly impacted the island's economy, affecting posh restaurants, prime retail lots, and specialized supercar businesses. Mohamad Azhar Mohd Jamil, a veteran in Langkawi’s supercar sector, noted a loss of interest from these wealthy visitors, who previously combined car purchases with holidays, leading to empty garages and reduced business for hotels and tourist attractions. Storage and maintenance businesses have seen over 50% income reduction, with skilled workers seeking alternative employment as the luxury car market has largely stalled.
