The ban, implemented in March for students from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan, has prevented these government-funded scholars, chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential, from studying in the UK. The universities argue this blanket measure is unfair and disproportionate, as Chevening applicants undergo a rigorous government assessment and are intended to return home to contribute to their countries. This policy risks alienating future global leaders, with the Chevening program having a strong track record of producing heads of state and influential figures.
