Leading universities urge Shabana Mahmood to exempt exceptional students from visa ban 23.05.2026

Leading UK universities, represented by the Russell Group and ResearchPlus, have appealed to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood to exempt exceptional students from conflict-stricken countries, specifically Chevening scholars, from a recent visa ban. The ban, implemented in March for students from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan, has prevented these government-funded scholars, chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential, from studying in the UK. The universities argue this blanket measure is unfair and disproportionate, as Chevening applicants undergo a rigorous government assessment and are intended to return home to contribute to their countries. This policy risks alienating future global leaders, with the Chevening program having a strong track record of producing heads of state and influential figures.
