Northumbrian Water has announced a potential breakthrough in the years-long pollution crisis affecting Cullercoats Bay in North Tyneside. The beach has received the lowest possible water quality rating from the Environment Agency (EA) since 2018 due to contamination from bacteria linked to human and animal faeces. For years, the water company, alongside the EA and North Tyneside Council, struggled to identify the root cause, initially blaming polluted groundwater.
