Lebanon tightens security as Israel continues strikes 09.04.2026

Lebanon's cabinet has ordered an immediate reinforcement of state authority in Beirut and restricted weapons possession to official forces in response to escalating Israeli military actions. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam emphasized the necessity of these measures for citizen safety. The government will also file an urgent complaint with the UN Security Council against Israel. President Joseph Aoun is intensifying diplomatic efforts for Lebanon's inclusion in a ceasefire and negotiations, expressing frustration with condemnatory statements. Overnight Israeli strikes on Beirut killed Ali Yusuf Harshi, secretary and nephew of Hezbollah's Naim Qassem, and targeted key crossings and Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon. International calls for de-escalation have been issued as Israeli air strikes intensify across Lebanon, following a US-Iran ceasefire agreement, though Israel stated it would continue operations.
