United States forces are set to complete their withdrawal from Syria within one month, concluding a presence that began with the international anti-jihadist coalition. The withdrawal commenced on Monday with the departure from a base in Qasrak, northeastern Syria, with convoys of military equipment observed heading towards the Iraqi border. This move follows previous withdrawals from bases at al-Tanf and al-Chaddadi. Approximately one thousand U.S. military personnel were stationed in Syria, conducting airstrikes against the Islamic State (IS) group, which was largely defeated in 2019. While IS retains dormant cells, the U.S. will continue to conduct airstrikes in Syria from regional bases. The withdrawal, expected to be finalized within twenty days, marks the end of a roughly 12-year military presence in northern and northeastern Syria.
