Letse ijsbreker redt twee schaatsers van ijsschots op zee 23.02.2026

Two skaters were rescued from an ice floe in the Baltic Sea near Plienciems, Latvia, after a crack in the ice caused them to drift out to sea around 8:00 PM on Saturday. The Coordination Centre for Search and Rescue Operations (MRCC) received a distress call and, with the assistance of the icebreaker 'Varma', located the individuals approximately one kilometer from the Latvian coast around 1:00 AM Sunday. They were brought ashore about two hours later and handed over to medical personnel, though their condition remains unknown. A spokesperson for the rescue brigade warned of the extreme dangers of skating on coastal natural ice, emphasizing how quickly ice can break apart.
