LGBT advocacy group cancels ASEAN event in Jakarta amid pushback 02.03.2026

The ASEAN Queer Advocacy Week, scheduled to convene in Jakarta, Indonesia, from July 17 to 21, has been canceled by its organizers, the ASEAN SOGIE Caucus, due to significant public and religious opposition. The event, intended to foster a safe space for Southeast Asian LGBT activists to discuss advocacy, navigate regional challenges, and raise awareness about human rights violations, was met with condemnation from groups like the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), who cited religious objections. The Jakarta Metro Police confirmed no permit was issued for the gathering, and the organizers cited threats as the reason for relocating the meeting outside Indonesia. This cancellation highlights the ongoing discrimination faced by LGBT communities in Indonesia, despite homosexuality not being illegal.
