Litauens Generalstabschef: „Vielleicht muss Deutschland seine Hausaufgaben machen“ 22.02.2026

Lithuania's Chief of General Staff, Raimundas Vaiksnoras, warns of a dangerous window for NATO following a potential ceasefire in Ukraine, emphasizing the need for increased defense readiness. He discusses Lithuania's plans to establish a new training area near the Suwalki Corridor, capable of hosting brigade-sized maneuvers, and anticipates a two to three-year deployment. Vaiksnoras also highlights the importance of developing indigenous long-range weapon systems, drawing inspiration from Ukraine's efforts, and stresses that NATO must be prepared to retaliate against Russian aggression, potentially in Kaliningrad. He urges Germany to accelerate its political decision-making processes regarding defense, while expressing confidence in the commitment of German soldiers. Vaiksnoras notes that while Russia's land forces are depleted by the Ukraine war, its air force, air defense, and navy remain operational, and its war economy is producing armaments faster than Europe.
