Lithuania ready to host more US troops if forces leave Germany, President Nausėda says 07.05.2026

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has stated that Lithuania is prepared to host additional US troops if they are withdrawn from Germany, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the American military presence in Europe. Following US President Donald Trump's announcement of plans to reduce troops in Germany, Nausėda stressed that NATO allies must ensure the US does not shift its focus away from the continent. Lithuania currently hosts over 1,000 US troops and has infrastructure commitments ready for more allied forces, having received US troops intermittently since 2014 and heavy battalions since 2019. Poland has echoed this sentiment, also expressing readiness to receive additional US troops.
