Lithuanian MPs propose scrapping constitutional ban on nuclear weapons deployment 03.07.2026

A group of 50 Lithuanian lawmakers registered a constitutional amendment on Friday to remove Article 137, which currently bans the deployment of weapons of mass destruction and foreign military bases on Lithuanian territory. The move came a day after President Gitanas Nausėda convened a meeting with top political leaders, who agreed the restriction was outdated given the changed security environment. Nausėda noted that Lithuania is now virtually unique among NATO members in having such a constitutional prohibition. Amending the constitution requires approval twice by at least 94 of 141 MPs, with a three-month interval between votes.
