US strikes Iran and reimposes sanctions in retaliation for attacks on commercial shipping 07.07.2026

The United States launched new military strikes against Iran on Tuesday, targeting port cities including Bandar Abbas, Sirik, and Qeshm Island, in direct retaliation for recent attacks on commercial shipping near the Strait of Hormuz. US officials characterized these strikes as punishment for acts of international terrorism perpetrated by Iran against innocent vessels. Alongside the military action, the United States has reimposed sanctions on Iranian oil sales to increase pressure on Tehran. These developments occurred while Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was returning to Tehran from Najaf, Iraq, following the funeral of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The strikes caused explosions and fires, reportedly hitting a commercial pier in Sirik and a telecommunications tower in Bandar Abbas. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump is expected to discuss security in the Strait of Hormuz during the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey.
