Low price or artisanal value? How to choose garments for the Santiago dance in Huancayo 07.07.2026

With the Santiago festivities in Huancayo approaching, a commercial competition has emerged between artisans at the Ráez Patiño market and import stores. While import stores offer affordable garments, such as hats and llicllas starting from 80 soles or corsets from 48 soles, local merchants emphasize the superiority of traditional craftsmanship. Guisela, a merchant at the Ráez Patiño market, warns that low prices on imports are often due to lower-quality materials or incomplete garments. In contrast, artisanal value is reflected in hand-embroidered fustanes that can reach 2,200 soles, compared to those priced between 180 and 360 soles. Despite price competition, demand for traditional costumes remains high due to their durability and fidelity to local cultural customs.
