M1 in Hungary: TV Station Apologizes for Lies During Orbán Era 07.07.2026

The Hungarian public broadcaster M1 experienced an unusual four-hour forced hiatus, during which the screen displayed only a black background with white text. This interruption of news reporting occurred following the electoral defeat of the pro-government Fidesz party under Viktor Orbán. M1 has previously been frequently criticized as a state mouthpiece and a "propaganda machine." The new Prime Minister, Péter Magyar of the Tisza Party, had already announced during the campaign that he would end one-sided reporting and high levels of state funding. In a Facebook post, Magyar promised that his government, together with professional organizations, would restore independent, impartial, and objective reporting. Following the hiatus, programming returned with entertainment elements such as films and series, with a return to regular news broadcasts not currently in sight. The situation highlights the massive upheaval in the Hungarian media landscape.
